Connect Group – East Reading

Our group spans a broad geographic area, reaching from the Abbey Quarter eastward to Earley. In size, we are a close-knit group of about ten people. Our members come from diverse backgrounds—ranging from young children to working adults to retirees.

We are a multi-ethnic community, including Brits, Iranians, Africans, and Chinese. Some of us are long-time residents of Reading, while others are newcomers. Language is never a barrier for us; we genuinely value and care for each other. Though we come from different backgrounds, we are united in Jesus and are one in the Holy Spirit!

Our group has been steadily growing and expanding, and we’d love to meet you soon. Please come and chat with us!

Objectives or Purposes

Complying with the biblical command of

And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds(Hebrews 10:24, KJV)

We have the following objectives.

  • Connect and Care

Build deep friendship within the group. Love and care for one another (John 13:34 KJV).

  • Support and Strengthen

Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Challenge and uplift one another’s spiritual growth as “Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend (Proverbs 27:17).

  • Expand and Evangelise

Encourage one another to lead a Christ-like life. Bring in people across the community to Jesus (Acts 1:8 KJV).

Regular Activities

Connect Group Fellowship Sessions after Sunday Service

Every two months, we hold fellowship sessions in the Sanctuary following Sunday Service. During these gatherings, we share our reflections on the sermon, discuss how to apply God’s teachings in our daily lives, and encourage one another to live faithfully. We conclude each session with intercessory prayers.

Home Visits and Love Feasts

We also gather in each other’s homes, where we share food, explore biblical teachings, and discuss life’s ups and downs. These gatherings provide not only delicious meals but also the deeper value of mutual support and spiritual comfort. Occasionally, we introduce different themes or games to add a bit of physical and mental fun to our time together.

Special thanks to Jill & Simon and Kitty & William for graciously opening their homes for these gatherings.

Highlights and Future Plans

Lunch at the Home of Jill and Simon

We enjoyed a delightful lunch at Jill and Simon’s home, which provided a wonderful opportunity for intercultural exchange among Brits, Iranians, Africans, and Hongkongers. We explored their home and enjoyed the warmth of their hospitality. Jill and Simon shared fascinating stories of their family and their previous missionary work around the world, leaving us in awe of God’s marvelous work in and through them.

Pancake Party at the Home of Jill and Simon

A cherished UK tradition is the pancake party held on the Tuesday before Lent. On February 23rd last year, Jill and Simon hosted a memorable Pancake Party at their home. They explained the history and customs of Shrove Tuesday, and we enjoyed pancakes, followed by a fun competition of pancake tossing! The joy and laughter from that day still resonate with us. A big thank you to Jill and Simon for such a delightful event.

Looking Ahead

We look forward to more prayer and Bible study sessions, festive celebrations, outings, and, if possible, joint activities with other connect groups in the future.
