English Classes at Abbey

Building Connections Through Conversation

ICAF (International Cafés) English Classes supports communities by providing resources to run English Conversation Cafés that cater to diverse language levels. These cafés create welcoming spaces for connection and learning, helping international residents—such as asylum seekers and newcomers on BNO visas—integrate into local life. With proven materials and dedicated volunteers, ICAF has empowered initiatives like the Abbey Baptist Church’s transformation into a thriving International Church in Reading. Now in its fourth year, this program continues to foster community, conversation, and cultural exchange.

A Fresh Start with Open Hearts

In 2021, Abbey Baptist Church took a leap of faith to reimagine its mission. After facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, our congregation decided to relaunch as an international church at the heart of Reading. From this vision, the ICAF International Café was born—a welcoming space for learning, connection, and cultural exchange.

With the support of ICAF (International Cafés), we launched an English Conversation Café designed to cater to all proficiency levels using carefully crafted materials. What began as a small initiative has grown into a thriving program, supporting asylum seekers from Iran and Hong Kong BNO visa holders. Now in its fourth year, the café remains a cornerstone of our mission to serve the international community.

Friendship Through Learning

The ICAF International Café is more than an English class—it’s a gateway to community and belonging. By helping new arrivals gain confidence in their English, we create a space where friendships flourish. Many participants also discover a pathway to faith and family within the church, making the café a unique bridge between cultural connection and spiritual growth.

What Happens at the Café?

We meet every Wednesday during school term time from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., offering a vibrant and inclusive space. Here’s what participants can expect:

  • English Conversation Practice: Group discussions designed for various levels, from beginner to advanced.
  • Supportive Materials: Using resources such as the Alpha Course and CPAS, the summer sessions invite participants to explore Christianity alongside language learning.
  • Community Engagement: Every session fosters a welcoming environment where participants share experiences and form deeper bonds.

Milestones and Moments of Joy

Our café has grown from humble beginnings to hosting 9 tables and welcoming up to 40 guests weekly. This success is thanks to the incredible dedication of our leaders and volunteers. At the end of each class we use a bible story, which is often shown as a video with helpful English subtitles, to both further extend vocabulary but also to introduce some ideas from our Christian faith to our many guests.
