Meet the Welcome Team
We are the Welcome Team at Abbey Baptist Church, established in May 2024, to embrace everyone as family. As our congregation grows, we strive to connect newcomers with the community and church activities. Additionally, we focus on helping them settle in and feel comfortable in their new environment.
Our role extends beyond simple greetings. We guide newcomers, provide name badges, and share multilingual Sunday Service Sheets. Furthermore, we encourage participation in “Connect Groups” for deeper engagement with those who lives close by. We also support the church by serving as fire wardens and assisting with seating arrangements when needed.
Currently, our team has 15 dedicated Welcomers. However, we are eager to expand to meet the needs of our growing congregation.
Our Goal
Our goal is to create a welcoming space where everyone feels at home and truly belongs. We strive to help newcomers develop a strong sense of connection within the community. Beyond introducing people to Jesus Christ, we aim to support them in their everyday lives through connections they established at church. By doing so, we help them settle and build meaningful, lasting relationships.
Through warm interactions and thoughtful introductions, we reflect God’s kindness in practical ways. We demonstrate by example and encourage individuals to deepen their relationship with Him and the church community.
Creating a Welcoming Space
Since the Welcome Team’s formation, we’ve greeted over a hundred newcomers, providing them with Welcome Packs containing information on church activities such as:
- Abbey iCaf (International Cafe)
- Abbey Renew Wellbeing Café
- Thursday Toddler’s Group
- Monthly outdoor walks
- Connect Groups
A dedicated Welcomer chats with each newcomer to understand their interests, needs and preferences. We guide them to sit with someone in the congregation who shares common interests or lives nearby, fostering immediate connections.
When appropriate, we introduce newcomers to Christianity, highlighting activities like the Start Course, Alpha Course, prayer meetings, and Bible study groups. This tailored approach ensures everyone feels supported spiritually and socially from their first visit.
Looking Ahead
Our team’s diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences have made newcomers feel genuinely at home from the start. Interestingly, some of our Welcomers were once newcomers themselves. Now, they are excitedly helping others integrate into the church family.
One heartwarming highlight is seeing newcomers invite their friends to church after just a few weeks. One of them has already been baptised at Abbey. This beautifully illustrates how connection and faith can quickly transform lives.
