About Us: Providing Shelter and Support
Bed for the Night (B4N) is a winter shelter program offering warmth, safety, and community to rough sleepers and refugees from January to March. Each night of the week, a different church in Reading hosts the shelter, with Abbey Church welcoming refugees on Wednesdays. Volunteers provide hospitality, including a hot evening meal, overnight supervision, and breakfast.
B4N began in 2015 as an initiative by Faith Christian Group (FCG) to support homeless individuals during the coldest months. Over time, the program expanded to include refugees with the right to stay in the UK but no secure housing. B4N partners with local councils, charities, and community groups like Care4Calais and Reading Borough Council to identify and assist those in need. Guided by Christian values, FCG emphasizes love, respect, and inclusivity, ensuring all guests are treated with compassion and dignity.
Our Mission: Making a Difference
At B4N, we aim to provide more than just a roof over someone’s head. Our mission is to:
- Offer a safe, welcoming space for those in need.
- Help rough sleepers transition off the streets into permanent housing.
- Provide support and protection for refugees, especially those with limited English.
- Build trust and connection through respectful, friendly interaction.

Building a Compassionate Community
Each year, B4N welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds. While maintaining guest confidentiality, we’ve seen how the homely atmosphere of B4N helps rough sleepers consider taking steps toward permanent housing. Refugees, too, benefit from the protection and resources offered during their stay. Volunteers consistently express how fulfilling it is to serve and connect with guests, strengthening bonds within our community.
